Piano Styling – Once you really know the melody to a song, are feeling good with accompanying that melody with its corresponding chords, and are able to play them with some fluency, then you have a decent foundation to really take things to the next level.
So many options are available to you when it comes to piano styling, from embellishing the melody, complimenting that melody with piano fills, and turning those chords into some sounds that can really add pizzazz. Playing in a cocktail piano style is quite conducive to becoming a competent piano stylist since you can really relax and simply incorporate a new idea every so often without ruining the integrity of the “flow” of a song being played in the basic way you’ve already learned it.
When it comes to piano styling, remember the three basic elements of music:
We can have fun with creating variations of all three of these elements. Perhaps your primary focus will be on one of these for starters. As you enjoy your time here more and more, you’ll discover some possibilities that you may not have previously considered. It is my hope that you will become inspired to explore your true potential with creativity in these areas of music and your piano playing.
I say it often… you don’t need to know it all in order to start taking your playing to a more creative level. For example, if you learn one new chord voicing, go ahead and find a place in that song where you can incorporate that voicing while keeping everything else as you have been playing it right along. Playing the piano creatively is a growing process and the more fun you have with it, the quicker you will grow. Students of my ProProach program quickly get a handle on this concept of learning one chordal idea, incorporating it in a tune, learning another, etc. Little by little, you use more and more tools as you fill up that piano playing “toolbox” of yours. Before you know it, you’re sounding sensational!
You will be discovering numerous learning tools that can help you along this journey of piano styling. Keep in mind that as you become accustomed to this gradual approach to spicing up those songs of yours, you’ll be creating your own personal style… and that’s something worth feeling terrific about.
Learn to appreciate the moment, learn something, use it… play to your heart’s content and enjoy!
